Sarah Stanley LICSW
Hi there! It’s nice to meet you. Thanks for stopping by to check out this page.
These bios are always a little awkward to me, but here is my story of how I became a therapist and what I would like to offer you when you come to talk with me.
From the time I was little, I’ve felt deeply, whole-heartedly. However, this was tricky growing up in a home with parents who taught me that life is hard and full of tragedy. (Both of them lost a child and faced divorce before they found each other and had me.) I learned that emotions were to be buried down deep and not let out.
Art was my freedom early in life. By drawing pictures of cows and writing poems about cats and leprechauns, I soaked in all the chances I could to express what was happening inside. A blank page for abstract painting, a notebook for journaling, or a silent room for playing classical piano was my therapy in my teen years.
Being highly sensitive has its low points. I felt the tension that would come and go at home, at school, with my peers. I was the girl who cried in my Algebra II class when I could tell the teacher wanted to communicate something but lacked the right words to convey his knowledge. I know what loneliness and rejection feel like. I tended to observe while others participated until I found myself and my people.
And when I did finally find myself, I realized that I kept saying, “I want to help people.”
Because of that, I sought my education through Counseling Psychology at Kentucky Christian University (2010) and a Master’s in Social Work at West Viginia University (2014). I’ve received a certification in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (2021) and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (2026). I’ve pursued training in parts work, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, somatic techniques. I obtained my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training through the Soma Institute (2022).
I don’t want you to do this life alone. Relationships are tough, and we all deserve to have our stories heard and space to process through the yuck.
I want to help by offering the same space for you that my blank page or silent room held for me, but this time, I hope to create this new version of you and your life with you. A room with a fellow life artist to hold your stories, pain, joy, sadness, fear, anger. A room with an adventure partner to help you find clarity and the courage to keep going when life is hard. A room with a collector of stories and emotions to enter together with your partner and work through difficult conversations with support and compassion.
Let’s do this together.
P.S. Here are some of the things I do now to embrace ALL the emotions. Life is too short just to observe.
P.S.S. Here’s “little me”
